12 Principles of Animation Lab
This lab will mainly be akin to an assignment write-up where we provide you with sample animations and some vague guidelines for points of improvement that can be made. In this particular lab, you will be provided with >> two Adobe Animate files <<, and will turn in two .mp4 OR .gif files.
Here we have your first animation, called "Hammer." You might realize at first glance that this animation is kind of trash. Well, the reality of the situation is that it is. And it's your job to take this and give a spiff and a sprinkle of oomph.
You may have also noticed the blue arrows pointing to distinct areas of the character. These are meant to provide hints as to where you can improve on the animation. Note: the blue arrows can be hidden in Animate as they are on a separate layer
As for the relevant principles that can be applied:

As for the relevant principles that can be applied:
- Anticipation
- Exaggeration
- Squash and Stretch
- Arcs
- Follow Through
- Timing
Next we have our second animation, Handshake. While simple, these two frames have a lot of space in between for you to give the blue character more personality.
The main principle being exercised here is Secondary Action, as the motion of shaking the other person's hand will stay consistent, it's up to you to decide aspects of the blue character such as:
The main principle being exercised here is Secondary Action, as the motion of shaking the other person's hand will stay consistent, it's up to you to decide aspects of the blue character such as:
- Their posture
- What were they feeling before the interaction?
- Their reaction (to the offered hand)
- What is their non-shaking hand doing in reaction?
- Their speed of grabbing the hand
- What is their non-shaking hand doing during the shake?
We would like to apologize that this lab came out later than was expected. As stated in class this week, this lab will be due at a later date, namely Wed 3/3/2021 11:59 P.M. PST.
